If you're in the medical, dental, or veterinary field, or you're the primary income earner for your family, then you need disability insurance. Fill out the form above and we'll reach out with next steps.

Disability Insurance with Student Loans

If you've got a huge amount of student loans, buying disability insurance can make a lot of sense. SLP Insurance LLC works with agents who specialize exclusively in disability insurance and term life to find you the right coverage at a good price. We work with agents that have access to volume-based discounts you might not find anywhere else. We also ask these agents to refer your business elsewhere if they know of a special discount program that you might be eligible for.

Disability insurance gets exponentially more expensive the longer you wait to buy it. If you're in the medical field, you want to protect your educational investment with an own-occupation disability policy. An ‘own occupation' policy means that it will pay a percent of your income usually until age 65 if you can't perform your job anymore, even if you're able to work in some other field.

If you expect your income will significantly increase within a few years (because you're in residency or fellowship for example), you'll want to buy additional riders to allow you to do that without going through an additional medical exam.

The Advantage of Working with an Independent Agent Specializing in Disability Insurance

Work with an agent that can offer you quotes from a variety of insurance companies so you get more coverage for a lower cost.

Buying from a “financial advisor” who works for one insurance company that sponsors March Madness is going to lead you to pay more than you need to — and you might also buy products you don't even need.

Make sure when you're shopping for a policy that you get offered rates from at least two to three insurance companies.

Using the links above to get a quote will make sure you're offered a variety of options.

Why You Want an Agent Who Will Send Your Business Elsewhere if It Benefits You

Imagine you fill out the quote form above and list several medical conditions that could impact whether or not you qualify for coverage at a reasonable price.

Perhaps you have a guaranteed issue policy offered through your residency program that does not require medical questions.

A good agent will know when to send you to another broker for a quote such as the scenario I just listed.

Another example might be a female dental resident who has unique unisex coverage discounts available from only one broker.

Regardless of the reason, if we know of a better coverage option or better discount than what we can provide, we aim to send you to another agent if we think they can potentially offer you a better rate or better coverage.

The good news is that in most cases, you'll find discounts and the coverage you need from our quote engine above.

Note that we don't submit for quotes if we think there's a reason not to, such as if we need to research whether or not you're eligible for a guaranteed issue policy through your training program.

Do You Need Extra Coverage as a Student Loan Borrower?

Keep in mind if you're pursuing forgiveness under an income based repayment plan that if your income goes down, so does your monthly payment. If you pass away, then your debt gets forgiven completely.

So for federal student loans, you do not need extra insurance coverage. Disability income from a policy you purchase is tax-free, so this should not impact your IDR payment amount, which would decrease substantially if you experienced a loss in income.

For private student loans, make sure you have adequate disability insurance coverage. Monthly payments on private student loans happen no matter what, so you might consider purchasing an optional rider so the insurance company will make your payments for you should you become disabled.

See if You Qualify for an Exclusive or Special Discount

Through SLP Insurance LLC and our partner insurance agencies, we seek to find you unique discounts for your disability and/or term life insurance needs.

The partner agencies we work with often get access to special discounts (particularly for disability insurance) because of their high-volume relationships with the insurance companies they work with.

We also ask them to send you to a different agency if they know about a policy discount that they are unable to provide.

If you are a resident or fellow still in or within a few months after graduating training, make sure you understand all of your options before applying for a disability insurance policy. Some institutions (like UPMC and AHN in Pittsburgh, University of Michigan, Cleveland Clinic, Yale, Johns Hopkins, etc.) work with disability insurance brokers who exclusively offer Guaranteed Standard Issue (GSI) disability insurance – designed for anyone with pre-existing health concerns or who want to maintain privacy. Unfortunately, many times, if you apply for disability insurance by answering health background questions, and you are declined or receive an unfavorable offer, you are no longer eligible for these GSI programs. Caveat Emptor!

We would notice if there are any health related issues for a resident in our form. We would just research to see if there’s a GSI program available at their residency or fellowship program and if there is we’d refer them to the broker who owns it. For many folks such as healthy males GSI policies don’t make sense as they might be able to get more attractive pricing than unisex rates. Also typically have the 24 month limit on mental disabilities. Or perhaps some people are ok paying more for privacy or not having to deal with answering medical questions. GSI policies are great. Our quoting tools don’t get immediately submitted with the companies if we notice any potential issues. thanks for your comment
